Patrick M Calello:

CLASS OF 1961

Patrick M's Story

My life took a sharp turn right after high school. A few months after graduating from East Side I joined a night club band and worked as a musician and a singer full time and part time for the next 15 years. I spent about three years working on the road. For a few years I had a recording contract with Epic records and I also was the lead singer on a dozen radio commericals. For four years I performed in a trio with Joe Pesci, the actor, and Frank Vincent, a lesser known actor but recently a regular in the cast of the Sporanos. I thought my singing was decent, but I realized after a while that my song writing ability wasn't good enough for the big time, and I had the good sense to leave the music business while I still had many good memories. (The first time I heard "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" Frankie Valli was singing it in my ear in the control room of the recording studio while the musicians were laying down the music track in the other room) They were good years for me and I learned many things about people and business that would help me later in life. I was in and out of college three times and never graduated. At 21 I got a part time job selling real estate, and at 26 years old (1970) I opened my own real estate office in North Newark. For 25 years I sold houses. In the late 1970's I formed a few partnerships and started buying, rehabilitating, and managing apartment buildings. Real Estate investing turned out to be my life's work. When I was 25 I married a beautiful girl from North Carolina who had recently moved to New Jersey. This year Diane and I will celebrate our 39th anniversary. Diane was an English teacher, but became a stay at home mom when our children were born. Our son, Patrick Joseph "PJ", attended Delbarton School and Richmond University. ue. His hobby is officiating Division 1 College LaCross. PJ's wife is a physician and they have a delightful eighteen month old daughter. Our daughter, Martha Ann, attended Villa Walsh Academy in Morristown and Gettysburg College. When she was in high school she was diagnosed with a learning disability and was tutored in how to compensate. I am still amazed at how hard she has worked to accomplish her goals. Martha recently obtained her Phd and she is now a professor at St Joseph's University in Philadelphia where she specializes in teaching a Master's program instructing educators on how to teach children with learning disabilities. Her husband is a professor Kean University. They have a three year old boy and we are experiencing the joy of having grandchildren. In 1998 I was one of the principal developers of Victoria Mews Assisted Living in Boonton Township, NJ. I am the managing partner of the partnership and for almost five years I've been working as the Executive Director of the business. I enjoy what I do, but I am planning to stop working full time in the not too distant future. In general life has been good, but certainly has not been without major bumps in the road. In 2002 I had colon surgery and began regular cancer screening at Sloan Kettering. In 2006 a very small cancerous tumor showed up in my liver and I took the agressive apporach and had surgery. Fortunately my liver has been clean for two years, but early this year (2008) it was necessary to have surgery in both lungs to remove very small (colon) cancerous spots that showed up on CT scans. In the past 30 months I've also had three rounds of chemo therapy and experienced some not so great days. The most recent news is that I am cancer free once again and working out on the treadmill almost every day. Incredibly, I am feeling healthy again and playing golf is back on my list of regular activities.
